African American Doctor Depicted as Gorilla at UCLA Event (by ShamefulHonestTruth)

More instances of discrimination against minorities at UCLA. And yet another example of how campus climate is not being deemed and important issue at this institution.

^ Every single day, I become aware of the fact that UCLA has some serious issues regarding diversity and racism, but none are being addressed.

These “Dudetips” are scattered around UCLA.
Can you imagine the outcry if it read:

Muslim tip #32
If you get on a plane, remember not to blow it up.

1) This is the second time I’ve seen someone counter the dudetips with “imagine if we told Muslims not to blow up planes.” WTF? I’m pretty sure falserapeculture is repeating something they heard elsewhere (so unoriginal either way), but how do people even come up with this stuff?
Dudes are not oppressed. Supposed misandry is not the same as racism, but way to trivialize and appropriate an oppressed group’s experience for your benefit.
2) There’s a tumblr called falserapeculture. Among other things, it highlights ”the women that ruin lives without much or any consequences for their lies.”
I don’t want to live in this world anymore.
3) Jesus Christ, I need to get my crap together and join Bruin Feminists next year because if they’re pissing off so many misogynistic assholes on campus and online, they must be doing something right.

So I guess if you’re #feminist, it’s okay to be #sexist. #smh #drama #ucla #university (Taken with Instagram at UCLA Dodd Hall)

What the utter fuck. This is not “sexist”… I do not think that word means what you think it means.
There is no such thing as oppression against men. And maybe you should consider that our culture constantly tells women not to GET raped—don’t wear revealing clothes because it looks like you’re asking for it, don’t go out after dark, carry pepper spray to protect yourself—but doesn’t teach men not to rape in the first place. This poster is an attempt by Bruin Feminists to reverse the trend, which ultimately leads to victims being blamed for rape, not the rapists.

Books I am dying to read… El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition.

Why is Cinco de Mayo—a holiday commemorating a Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862—so widely celebrated in California and across the United States, when it is scarcely observed in Mexico? As David E. Hayes-Bautista explains, the holiday is not Mexican at all, but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California during the mid-nineteenth century. Hayes-Bautista shows how the meaning of Cinco de Mayo has shifted over time—it embodied immigrant nostalgia in the 1930s, U.S. patriotism during World War II, Chicano Power in the 1960s and 1970s, and commercial intentions in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, it continues to reflect the aspirations of a community that is engaged, empowered, and expanding.

Professor Bautista talked to us about his new book during an event for my Chicano Studies class last quarter, and I’ve been biding my time until it was released. Now I just need to track it down somewhere on campus.

“The implication is that if you are “too sensitive” then your feelings are invalid because they are extreme and those with feelings deemed extreme have no right to complain. ”Too sensitive” compared to whom, exactly? The term frames people who accept depictions of racism in media as normative, while we who are “too sensitive” are the ones not getting with the program.”

Twelve Anti-Rape Tips Guaranteed to Work!

v-dayucla:

Back in 2011, Social Awareness Network for Activism through Art and VOX: Voices for Planned Parenthood collaborated on a series of educational posters revolving around the theme of “Don’t rape,” rather than “Don’t get raped.” Though we ultimately scrapped the posters for budgetary reasons, we’ve chosen to post these designs online so that other advocates can perhaps draw ideas from them. Feel free to print or share these posters with your own community. :-)

TRIGGER WARNING: Anti-Latin@ Racism And Sexism

A UCLA Latino student’s apartment door was tagged up with racist comments. This event should definitely get media coverage. There’s a hidden racism on campus and I’m sure it happens on other campuses too. Schools never want to look bad, but its not about that. Its about gaining visibility for the prejudice that affects its students.

Racist And Sexist Slurs On UCLA Student's Apartment Door

jesus fucking christ. stay classy college students.

Honestly, the amount of diversity I encounter in my life has decreased dramatically since coming here, while the amount of ignorance has increased quite a bit.  Sometimes I just get so tired of living on the affluent side of the town in a school that spouts “we’re so diverse!” bullshit while still maintaining a white majority. It only leads to rampant privilege-denying.
